So I picked up a copy of the Zombie film the Demented yesterday – we are currently in the middle of a 6 day heat wave and I was kind of grumpy when I got home and cranked up the ac. I was like “If this film sucks in any way I am switching it right off – screw even waiting till the end – I am in no mood for some cheap DIY Zombie film right now”
So surprisingly the film actually has a decent budget – including Twilight‘s Michael Welch I am not sure who the cinematographer is but he does a great job picking up all the Louisiana colors (brilliant greens etc). Despite being a hot and cranky old man I managed to sit through the entire film as well and guess what “The Demented” isn’t a bad film, but it isn’t the greatest film ever made either. Look don’t get me wrong I am a HUGE believer that you can make the most amazing Zombie film ever with a minimal budget (Night of the living dead anyone?) but to me its little things even things that don’t cost any one that can make a break the film. The cliche of the 6 college friends – the rich asshole, the sensitive law student, the brave jock etc have been done to death – besides do these cliques even hang out at school/college? An example of a small plot that doesn’t cost anything is the escape in the car where the driver runs over countless Zombies and then later in the film while making his escape he swerves to avoid on – trashing the car – makes no sense and isn’t consistent to the characters personality.
The twist at the end is certainly interesting can’t really say more than that without giving it away but nice to see.
Like I said the film isn’t bad in fact its better than a ton of stuff that runs on Sy Fy channel but in my mind with a few more tweaks it would have been an excellent Zombie film.
